The Times reports on Church plans for affordable housing on ‘Benefits Street’
The Times and Sunday Times’ senior property writer, Martina Lees, recently interviewed Bishop Guli, Daniel Mayes from the Church Development Agency and Kate Cortez from Truro diocese.
In the article, Bishop Guli discussed the progress made by the Church since the Coming Home report was published, saying that it had been very slow, but there was still much to be encouraged about.
The article highlighted the first social housing project to be built by the new Church Housing Association, in a vicarage garden that backs on to James Turner Street in Birmingham - made infamous by the Channel 4 documentary ‘Benefits Street’ in 2014. Planning permission has been submitted for 17 homes, and the vicarage itself is a hub for a community trust that hosts numerous activities for residents.
Another example in the article is the project to build four homes on glebe land in St Ewe in Cornwall.
